CSPA welcomes outcome of Canadian International Trade Tribunal expiry review findings concerning rebar dumping

OTTAWA, February 3, 2022 – Following the expiry review by the Canadian International Trade Tribunal (CITT) concerning the dumping of rebar from six countries that have caused injury to the Canadian industry, Catherine Cobden, President & CEO of the Canadian Steel Producers Association (CSPA) released the following statement:

“The CSPA and its members welcome the CITT’s decision to continue to its finding for five more years regarding the dumping of rebar into Canada. With an estimated 600 million tonnes of overcapacity of steel in the world, every year, Canada’s trade remedy system is critical to addressing unfairly traded imports and maintaining a competitive market.”

“The decision to continue the finding is necessary to level the playing field so that Canadian producers can more fairly compete against cheap, unfairly traded offshore imports that are entering our market.”

“Unfair imports damage the domestic industry, their employees, and communities. A robust, timely, and responsive trade remedy system is essential to defending all of Canada’s interests, particularly at a time of continued global disruption.”

The six countries involved, Belarus, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, Japan, Portugal, and Spain, were previously found to have been dumping rebar into the Canadian market, and this decision indicates that they would be likely to continue. As a result of the CITT’s decision, dumping duties will continue to be applied to imports from these countries.
