November 5, 2024 – OTTAWA – Today, the Government of Canada’s Country of Melt (COM) requirements come into effect, requiring steel importers to report COM information.
Catherine Cobden, President and CEO of the Canadian Steel Producers Association (CSPA) released the following statement in response to these new requirements:
“Country of Melt monitoring is one of several steps the Government of Canada has taken recently to protect the integrity of its domestic market and curb unfair trade practices on our industry. By increasing the transparency of the domestic supply chain for steel imports and providing a more comprehensive picture of the origins of imports, these regulations will support and promote fairer trade.”
“Global excess capacity and unfair trade practices hurt the Canadian steel industry, and this new requirement will help Canadian steel companies compete on a level playing field and protect Canadian jobs.”
“The CSPA is grateful for the action taken by the Canadian government in protecting our industry and for aligning with our largest trade partner, the U.S. to ensure the North American supply chain is strong and stable.”
"The CSPA expects the data generated by this new tool to foster further awareness of steel entering Canada and new insights into where additional policy tools may be required.”
